Each Friday we post a list of our favorite articles, blog posts, and other resources we’ve run across that relate to Project Based Learning.

Here’s what we liked this week:

Evaluating Project-Based Learning

How Deeper Learning Helps Children Succeed
Getting Smart
An excerpt from Paul Tough’s book Helping Children Succeed: What Works and Why, highlighting the role deeper learning and PBL play in benefitting students in poverty. Extensive quotes from BIE Executive Director Bob Lenz from when he headed Envision Education.

25 Creative Ways to Incorporate More Project Based Learning in the Classroom

Outhouse Design Competition Offers Real Learning, Real Bathroom Humor
KnowledgeWorks
Here’s a fun project: 9th and 10th graders competed to design and outhouse for an island in a lake in Maine. Their parameters: no running water, no electricity, a limited budget, EPA composting standards, building codes, and… it couldn’t smell. The teams presented their designs to a panel of judges that included local building code officials, a plumbing inspector, and an architect.

Teachers learning real-life application of skills
The Vicksburg Post
A great example of how school districts can support PBL teachers: provide “externships” where teachers learn real-world applications for their subject area by spending a few days with professionals in engineering, retail, government, and medicine.

changingislearning blog
Blogger Michael Niehoff, a member of BIE’s National Faculty, makes a much-needed case for face-to-face learning in the 21st century, which defines a place for PBL.
